Understanding the ASEC Signposting system
Each session has been characterised in two dimensions, indicating the type of content and target audience.
Accessibility
This indicates the level of knowledge required by the delegates to fully understand the paper and gain the maximum benefit from its content. There are three levels here:
- Beginner which is aimed at people who are new to the topic and will typically hold the Awareness level of competence in this area;
- Practitioner which is aimed at people who have performed some work in this area and are looking to increase their knowledge and who will typically hold the Supervised Practitioner or Practitioner level of competence;
- Advanced which is aimed at people with extensive experience, who are looking to hone their skills and knowledge in the area and who will typically hold the Expert level of competence.
Application
There are three levels, which are:
- Research aimed at new ideas that have been carried out as part of a research project;
- Case Study that details examples of how Systems Engineering good practice has been applied on real projects, showing real results;
- Good Practice that details how mature Systems Engineering practices are being disseminated, deployed and adopted.

Lean Culture and it’s place in Systems Engineering

Presenter Bio :

Adam is a Systems Engineer applying best practices from multiple Systems disciplines including Model Based Systems Engineering and Systems Thinking in his role as "Technical Process and Compliance Lead" on the SCS Railways HS2 London Tunnels project. In this role he looks after the technical elements of the Quality Management System, the modelling and process improvement aspects, and governance and compliance.

In a wider capacity he is a Principal Systems Engineer feeding into Costain's Systems Based Approach Capability which sits within Costain's Digital Advisory Group. He supports projects and the function with his experience of Systems Modelling, Systems Engineering and Systems Integration whilst growing his capability in Systems Thinking and Systems Assurance.

After spending the first decade of his career in the automotive and aerospace sectors, he is now making a career applying a systems-based approach to Infrastructure challenges. Besides his delivery work, Adam has been leading Systems Engineering teams and enjoys the people and leadership challenges, just as much as getting his hands dirty. Supporting his learning in the field of Systems Quality Management, Adam recently completed his Systems Engineering Quality Management certification with QMI in conjunction with the INCOSE SEQM working group. He is a certified AgilePM with APMG and is looking forward to taking this learning forward and participating in the outputs from the INCOSE SEQM Working group.

David’s 43-year career started as an Electrical Engineer for Johnson Matthey Metals being introduced early on to improvement processes such as quality circles. Moving into the service industry, leading teams and facing customers David developed his leadership style and understanding of managing the customers need with a data and fact driven approach. Manufacturing beckoned again maintaining and improving the complex processes of Silver Halide Photographic paper and film production for Kodak. Here David qualified as a Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt leading his teams of process engineers through upgrade and improvement projects to reduce the unit manufacturing cost to world class.

As Silver Halide demised service called again and David moved into the aviation arena and more specifically the baggage operation for Heathrow Airport, assuming the role of Continuous Improvement manager for Vanderlande David brought his version of Lean Six Sigma into the complex airport infrastructure changing the culture to a visually driven workplace with connected metrics demonstrating the value at all levels.

Currently David is working for the SCS Joint Venture building the London Tunnels of HS2 where he is again brining his version of Lean Six Sigma into the system engineering approach being adopted by the project.

Session Description :

The context of this workshop is an organisation which may be taking a systems-based approach to understanding, developing, modelling and controlling its processes. However, the practical approach demonstrated can be used in many environments.

To progress work following a systems approach, where the system of interest is that of an organisation and its processes, you need to elicit stakeholder needs, gather high level client contractual requirements, understand and define process boundaries, define the detail of interfaces and model the process identified. All of this requires engagement from process owners, the experts, to leadership sponsors, holders of the purse strings.

Information though is only useful if it is the right data, and it is organised such that it can provide pathways and insights to achieve a tangible deliverable.

This tutorial will show how organising information using the lean principle of 5S helps to produce a process capable of delivering a predictable outcome at the same time as removing emotional input from those involved. This will demonstrate that using Lean as a culture within organisations can help the integration of a systems engineering approach.

There will be 5 distinct rounds of activity that focus on the 5 S’s (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain) building up to an effective repeatable modelled process that can be deployed and is guaranteed to deliver to the requirements. These rounds are practical and require candidate involvement, each round brings an insight into how using 5S as a philosophical approach to work can promote a Lean culture. They will potentially promote emotive response that include frustration, anger, enlightenment and enjoyment.

Expectations will be set before the practical exercise that will include the lifecycle of the process and the consequences of not providing the desired output. Understanding the requirements of the task before diving into the detail is an important part of this learning.

Best Practices in System of Systems Engineering: Applying Unified Architecture Framework

Presenter : Dr. Aurelijus Morkevicius and Constantin Neacsu

Aurelijus Morkevicius has 17 years of experience in systems and software engineering. Currently, he is a director of industry business consulting for systems engineering in Dassault Systems, CATIA brand. His areas of expertise are model-based systems and software engineering, as well as defense architectures (DoDAF, NAF, UAF). Aurelijus works with companies such as Aerospace Corporation, Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing, MITRE, and other. Aurelijus is INCOSE ASEP and OMG Certified UML, Systems Modeling and BPM professional. He is also the co-chairman and the leading architect for the current OMG UAF standard. Aurelijus is also the originator of MagicGrid framework. He is representative of Dassault Systemes in INCOSE and NATO Architecture Capability Team. Aurelijus received PhD in Information Systems Engineering from Kaunas University of Technology in 2013. Aurelijus is a Professor of practice in the same university, book author, author of multiple articles, and a speaker in multiple conferences.

Constantin Neacsu has ten years of experience in the engineering field, during which he has acquired and developed his acumen in many industries and positions, from automotive to aerospace, in design, manufacturing, testing and systems. For the past five years, Constantin has been architecting systems and evolving the MBSE expertise with fellow engineers from leading companies in the UK. Constantin has a Bachelor & Masters in Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. He is an Industry Process Senior Specialist with the CATIA Magic Cyber Systems team, based in London.

Session Description :

Systems engineering practices are widely spreading around the globe in different industries. The problems that we are trying to solve are getting more and more complex. More often, we are facing System of Systems challenges. But do we really understand what system of systems means? Is there a difference between systems engineering and system of systems engineering in terms of processes and practices? Where does Enterprise Architecture come into play?

The tutorial explores and debates the Systems vs. System of Systems concept with Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) as the framework and Unified Architecture Framework Modeling Language (UAFML) as the language to model Enterprise Architectures. The tutorial presents major UAF concepts and elements and how it can be used to create models of generic enterprise architectures. It also discusses if UAF and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) can both fit together and what could be the best approach for transitioning from one to another in an integrated modeling environment.
The major concepts discussed include Strategic, Operational, Resources, and Projects Viewpoints along with structure, connectivity, processes, and roadmap Aspects. Attendees of the tutorial are also introduced to the elements used to model UAF Views such as Capability, Operational Performer, Operational Activity, Resource, Function, Project, and how these elements are related.

Please note that the scope of the tutorial is expanded beyond defence architectures. The knowledge gain is genericized to be applicable to architecting system of systems of any domain.
The tutorial features practical assignments to the audience and is followed by a case study as a part of a real-world system model. Attendees are encouraged to take part in an interactive discussion on the topic.
